The 17th March 2013 will go down in the history books of St Mirren as the day they won the Community League Cup for the first time in their proud history by beating Hearts 3-2 in an exciting and dramatic final.

Bus-loads of supporters set off from Paisley on the short journey to Hampden, 17,000 in all,  hoping, confident even,  that today would be the day - the day that the team would bring home the Cup, 26 years after their last triumph in the Scottish Cup.

The game got off to the worst possible start as a nervy St Mirren conceded a goal after only 10 minutes. For the next 25 minutes Hearts put them under the cosh, missing chance after chance as St Mirren failed to get to grips with the occasion..

And then suddenly in a flash of brilliance Thompson sent Teale off on a run on goal, with great awareness he passed to Goncalves to shoot into an empty net.

Game On.

The second half had barely begun when fine work down the left led to a cross by Dummett and Thompson thumped home. Unbelievable!

St Mirren now began to dominate the game and more joy as Newton played a one-two with Goncalves and lashed the ball past a helpless Kello in goal.

Sheer joy in the Saints section of the ground, desolation in the Hearts ranks.

Surely the Buddies couldn’t lose now?

With 25 minutes still to go Hearts went for broke but could not get that all important goal, and then as the Hearts support started making for the exits with five minutes to go a second goal by Stevenson crept into the net for 3-2.

Hearts players pushed forward in search of an equalizer but Samson stood strong and the woodwork came to the rescue as Saints hung on for a famous victory.
